Why I Oppose the H.R. 5786 The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010

August 13, 2010

As consumers we are forced to make choices. Everyday we make choices. This or That? Whats right and whats wrong? Whats safe and whats not? We all make choices. Sometimes our choices are made by influence. What we hear, or learn. Sometimes they are based on what you as a person believe in.  Recently after reading material on The Safe Cosmetic Act bill, I believed that it was a good idea. Us as consumers need to be protected and companies shouldn’t be allowed to use, say something you’d use under the hood of your car,  in your mouthwash as well.  But how much protection is too much?

In reading more, I’ve learned that the bill will ask of companies both big and small, a ridiculous amount of tasks. I as a consumer don’t rely on the government to protect me, nor do I trust them. I as a person, and a mother, I make my own decisions based on my beliefs and my knowledge. I know what ingredients are good, and what to stay away from. If you are like me, and a lot of other very chemical concerned mothers, you’ve probably already, taken your business to small companies that care, and that don’t use yucky stuff.

You also know that small companies are small, make small batches of products, waste not, and stick to the basics.  This bill would literally change the way they do business, and not for the better. It will put a lot if not all of them out of business. Asking huge tasks such as a extremely ridiculous ingredient listing, lots of lab testing, mountains of paperwork, and loads of extra expenses. Which you know where that will go, to the the consumers. Yes, you. Not because they want to, but because they have to. If companies stay a float, it will be come at a rising cost to consumers.

Simple ingredients like Olive Oil and Lavender will need 20+ things to describe it, exactly. I don’t need that. Its Lavender, I know what lavender is. Totally not nessecary. A simple farmer who just say, grows lavender and sells it to a small business nearby, will no longer be able to. It will need lab testing. And about the ingredient listing….

Lavender Essential Oil

(Cineole Octanol, Octanone, Alpha Bisabolol, Alpha Cadinol, Alpha Humelene, Alpha Phellandrene, Apha Pinene, Alpha Terpinene, Alpha Terpineol, Alpha Terpinyl Acetate, Alpha Thujene, Alpha Thujone, Beta Bisabolol, Beta Pinene, Beta Thujone, Borneol, Bornyl Acetate, Camphene Camphor, Cineolealpha Terpineol, Carvone, Caryophyllene, Carophyllene Oxide, CIS Alpha Terpineol, CIS Alpha Bisabolene, CIS Carveol, CIA Linalol Epoxide, CIS Ocimene, Citronellal, Citronellol, Coumarine, Cuminaldehyde, Eugenol, Furfural, Geraniol, Geranyl Acetate, Geranyl Butyrate, Hexanol, Hexyl Tiglate, Isoborneol, Lavandulol, Lavandulyl Acetate, Limonene, Linanlol, Linalyl Acetate, Methyl Heptenone, Myrcene, Nerol, Neryl Acetate, Oleanolic Acid, P Cymene, Rosemarinic Acid, Sabinen, Terpinenol, Terpinolene, Trans Carveol, Trans Epoxy Linalyl Acetate, Trans Linanol Epoxide, Trans Ocimene, Ursolic Acid)

Serious!! This is how lavender will need to be declared in ingredients, if this passes. Please, as if consumers weren’t already confused enough, lets give everyone complex words that we can’t even pronounce, when lavender would have done just fine.

What started out as a good idea, got completely blown out of proportion. I personally don’t need the bill to be passed. I do just fine on my own buying chemical free products from small honest companies.  I don’t need help from the government. Its getting so out of control, someday they’ll be looking over your shoulder telling you that you didn’t tie your shoes right, if it doesn’t stop.

In my honest opinion, this bill, and the book need to be thrown at the big guys. There are VERY few big companies, who are in it win it. It being change. A cause.  Don’t misunderstand me, please. I am ALL in favor of a safer, chemically free place. I’m not in favor of it destroying the little guy. They’ve been behaving all along so why should they suffer. Get loud with the ones who haven’t. Leave the little guy alone. He’s just trying to make a difference, naturally.  Be Informed, and be part of the movement!

You can be part of the change. For the better.  Sign the petition.
